CHARLESTON SC 6.4 INCH HARDING SHELL
Charleston SC witnessed the greatest use of heavy artillery during the US Civil War.  There was brutal fighting in Charleston for well over 3.5 years.  There were iron clad warships (US & CS), numerous fortifications, floating batteries, torpedoes and mines, hand to hand fighting, the use of hand grenades, the shelling of civilians and of course the first successful submarine attach in history.

This projectile is a Harding Shell that was fired by either a rifled 32 pounder or a 6.4 inch Brooke Rifle.  Harding projectiles are only found in the Charleston area.  This shell was found on Long Island which is located between James Island and Morris Island.  It would have been fired in association with the Fort Wagner Campaign sometime most likely during 1863.

MONSTER 11 INCH MORTAR SHELL WITH BRASS NAVY WATERCAP FUSE - FORT FISHER, NC
The verbal history on this piece is that it was found years ago at Fort Fisher in North Carolina. It is equipped with a brass navy water cap fuse that is dated 1862.

This shell is extremely well preserved, cleaned, coated and disarmed.  I would much prefer a battlefield over one w/ an unknown or Bannerman's provenance.  This shell was fired from an 11 inch Dahlgren smooth bore cannon.

FORT WAGNER CHARLESTON SC 10.0 INCH CONFEDERATE MORTAR SHELL W/ WOODEN FUSE
You really can't beat the provenance on this shell either, as I can't imagine any 10.0 inch mortar that is more historic than this one.  This mortar shell retains the original wooden fuse!  Includes tong holes for lift as well.  Fort Wagner played a pivotal role in the battle for Charleston in the Civil War.  The movie "Glory" gives one an idea as to how brave the civil war soldier was on both sides of the conflict.  Really cool relic in exceptional condition.

This shell is not listed in Jack Bell's book, "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordinance."  If you want a huge mortar shell from the Civil War from as significant historic area/event as they come for your collection, this is the one for you.

PETERSBURG VIRGINIA BATTLEFIELD 8.0 INCH MORTAR SHELL
I acquired this shell years ago from a collector/relic hunter whose front yard still contains some of the rifle trenches that were present during the Civil War there in Petersburg.  This shell has moderate pitting and includes two indentations where tongs would be used to pick up the shell and lower it into the mortar.  This shell would have been equipped with a wooden fuse that deteriorated away after having been in the ground all these years.
